Satan's Wrath: Aeons of Satan's reign

11/11/13  ||  sincan

Do you remember the guy with the facial tattoo who figured in Electric Wizard during a couple of years? Yeah, he and some fellow Greeks now has this old school black/thrash metal band named Satan’s Wrath, a rather brave moniker, since you don’t want that name if you sound like Avenged Eyelinerfold.

Do they sound like a couple of teenagers with too many negative emotions (since they know they suck) to handle, nope, don’t worry. Imagine if Nifelheim was from Greece and had less memorable songs and you are relatively close to how this band sounds.

The first track that was relieved upon the blood-drenched altar was Die white witch die and there is no big secret about this being a very guitar centralized record, with riffs spanning from heavy metal to thrash and spiced up into black metal with a solo here and there. If this was poker this would not be a game of high stakes. But why should you if you have a working recipe?

However I have some issues with this record and I’m going to point them out so that you also will get bothered by them. Oh boy, I’m hilarious! Well, first I tend to have problems with vocals being so high in the mix in this type of music, especially when they sometimes are delivered in a much peculiar way and with lyrics that would make you grasp for your breath for some reason which I will not go into. It might be so that it is just how the lyrics are delivered and not the lyrics themselves which makes me bothered, I seriously don’t know with this little fucker. Then closely behind the vocals are the guitars having its ball, and well, it is almost as if it is a duet between the vocals and the guitars and the drums are the third wheel (but doing pretty fine there) and the bass is a used condom hanging in the bush close to this. I bet you follow exactly.

After all this is a rather solid record with nothing radically new, which often is a stamp of quality, but with a couple of bothering factors and some tracks being weaker than other ones.
